Feedback I can play Real files requiring v3 codec on my portable Mac (OS 10.6, “Snow Leopard”) but not on my desktop system (10.7, “Lion”) because the installer that works on Lion doesn’t include the old codec. The player tries to download it from Real Media but it can’t because, according to Real’s own pages, support has been dropped as of September 2011. Bad news first: the files necessary to play the older Real files were compiled using the PowerPC language and need the “Rosetta” program embedded in the intel version MacOS in order to run. That means that the new versions of MacOS, “Lion” and no doubt the future versions, cannot run them since “Rosetta” is no longer part of the OS. In a nutshell: Real Player cannot be used on a Mac running “Lion” to play the older Real files. Newer files, sure, but not the older ones requiring the 3.0 codec. Now for the good news, and it’s really good: the open-source program VLC (available for download at “videolan.org”) plays the older Real Player files perfectly using its own native codecs.

I’ve just installed the VLC program on “Lion” and it plays old Real files without any problems. Looks like it supports lots of other things too like DVDs but I haven’t got into that yet.
